CLATapult Introduces Speed Reading & Mental Health in CLAT Prep

Every year, lakhs of students across India begin their CLAT preparation journey with the same checklist: Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, English, Quantitative Techniques, and General Knowledge. These five subjects have long been treated as the entire universe of CLAT prep. But at CLATapult, Kolkata’s leading CLAT coaching institute, we have come to recognise that this checklist is incomplete.

This year, CLATapult is introducing two new pillars into its CLAT coaching in Kolkata: speed reading techniques and mental health well-being. These are not side add-ons or optional workshops. They carry equal weightage alongside the five core subjects, because without them, even the strongest subject knowledge fails to translate into a good CLAT rank.

Why CLAT Preparation Needs More Than Just the Five Subjects

CLAT is not a test of what you know. It is a test of how fast and how accurately you can process information under pressure. With all questions to be attempted in 120 minutes, most of which are passage-based, the exam rewards students who can read quickly, comprehend deeply, and stay calm while doing it.

Over the last few years, CLAT passages across sections, not just English and Legal Reasoning, have grown noticeably denser and more layered. Static facts have given way to inferential questions rooted in long, convoluted paragraphs. A student who reads slowly, or who panics the moment a passage looks unfamiliar, is at a structural disadvantage regardless of how much they know. This is precisely the gap CLATapult’s new initiatives are designed to close.

Speed Reading Techniques: Reading Faster Without Reading Less Carefully

Speed reading is often misunderstood as skimming. At CLATapult, we teach it as a discipline: a set of methodologies that train the eyes and the brain to process text more efficiently, without sacrificing comprehension or accuracy.

What the Speed Reading Program Covers

Our speed reading curriculum, built specifically for CLAT aspirants, focuses on a few evidence-backed techniques:

  • Chunking: Training students to read groups of words together instead of one word at a time, which reduces the number of eye fixations per line.
  • Reducing subvocalisation: Many students silently pronounce every word as they read, which slows them down significantly. We work on techniques to minimise this habit.
  • Active previewing: Teaching students to skim a passage’s structure before a detailed read, so they know what to expect and where key information is likely to appear.
  • Timed passage drills: Repeated, structured practice using passages of the exact difficulty level seen in recent CLAT exams, gradually reducing the time taken per passage.

These techniques are woven into our regular CLAT classes rather than taught as a one-off session. Students practise speed reading alongside their Legal Reasoning and English preparation, so the improvement is visible in their actual mock test scores, not just in isolated drills.

Why This Matters for CLAT 2027-28 Aspirants

CLAT’s passage-heavy format means that reading speed directly affects how many questions a student can even attempt, let alone answer correctly. A student who improves their reading speed by even 20 to 30 percent effectively buys themselves several extra minutes in the exam, minutes that can be the difference between a four-digit and a three-digit rank.

Mental Health Well-Being: Addressing the Silent Struggle of CLAT Aspirants

The second, and equally important, extension to CLATapult’s coaching philosophy is mental health support.

CLAT aspirants are, in most cases, Class 11 and 12 students who are simultaneously preparing for their board exams. They are managing school assignments, tuition schedules, mock tests, and the weight of a single exam that many believe will define their entire career. This is a heavy load for a teenager to carry, and it often goes unspoken.

The Reality of Anxiety Among CLAT Aspirants

Anxiety, sleeplessness, and even panic attacks are far more common among CLAT aspirants than most parents and students openly acknowledge. The pressure tends to peak in the months leading up to the exam, when mock test scores fluctuate and the fear of underperformance sets in. Left unaddressed, this pressure does not just affect a student’s well-being. It directly affects their performance, since a mind under chronic stress finds it harder to concentrate, retain information, or think clearly under exam conditions.

How CLATapult’s Mental Health Initiative Works

CLATapult’s mental health well-being program is built around a few core objectives:

  1. Normalising the conversation: Creating an environment where students feel comfortable discussing stress and anxiety with mentors, rather than hiding it.
  2. Structured mentorship: Regular one-on-one check-ins with faculty, many of whom are current NUJS students who have themselves been through the CLAT journey and understand the pressure firsthand.
  3. Practical stress management techniques: Simple, sustainable habits such as structured study-break schedules, breathing exercises, and realistic goal-setting to prevent burnout.
  4. Balancing boards and CLAT prep: Guidance on time management that acknowledges board exam pressure instead of treating CLAT preparation in isolation.

You can read more about the team behind these initiatives on our About Us page, where our current NUJS faculty share their own experiences with the CLAT journey.

A Holistic Model for CLAT Coaching in Kolkata

By giving speed reading and mental health the same weightage as Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, English, Quantitative Techniques, and General Knowledge, CLATapult is redefining what CLAT coaching should look like. It is no longer enough to simply cover the syllabus. Students need to be trained to read fast, think clearly, and stay mentally resilient through what is undeniably one of the most demanding years of their academic life.

For students preparing for CLAT 2027-28, this holistic approach can make a meaningful difference, not just in their final rank, but in how they experience the preparation journey itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are speed reading techniques in CLAT preparation?

Speed reading techniques for CLAT include chunking words, reducing subvocalisation, active previewing of passages, and timed reading drills. These methods help students read CLAT’s long passages faster while maintaining comprehension and accuracy.

Why is reading speed important for CLAT?

CLAT has 150 questions to be solved in 120 minutes, most based on lengthy passages. Faster, accurate reading allows students to attempt more questions within the time limit, directly improving their chances of a better rank.

Do CLAT aspirants really face anxiety and panic attacks?

Yes. Many CLAT aspirants experience anxiety, sleeplessness, and panic attacks due to the combined pressure of board exams and CLAT preparation. This is a common but often unspoken challenge among law entrance aspirants.

How does CLATapult support students’ mental health during CLAT prep?

CLATapult offers structured mentorship, regular check-ins with faculty, practical stress management techniques, and guidance on balancing board exam preparation with CLAT prep, aimed at reducing anxiety and preventing burnout.

Is CLATapult’s speed reading program a separate course?

No. Speed reading techniques are integrated into CLATapult’s regular CLAT coaching classes and mock test practice, rather than taught as a standalone or optional module.
